Frequently Asked Questions: Classes

What does it cost?
All of our classes are taught in 6-week sessions. The 6-week session consists of 6 one-hour classes, one class a week. The total fee for the class is $60, which is payable at the first class.

Where do we meet?
Classes are held at the Evansville Ballet (333 Plaza East Blvd. suite E) on Evansville's East Side (in the same building with Bravo Photographic Studios.)   http://www.evansvilleballet.org

What do I wear?
Something comfortable. Most of our students wear something like yoga pants and tank tops. Please don't wear something overly baggy like a big T-shirt. We need to be able to see the line of your body. You can take class barefoot or in soft ballet or jazz slippers. Please, no street shoes on the dance floor.

I'm overweight/underweight or out of shape. Can I still take class?
Of course you can!!! Belly dance is for women of all shapes and sizes! There is no such thing as "too much belly" or "too little belly" for this class.

Is this like Zumba "Bellydance" ?
No. Not at all. Zumba is a type of floor aerobics class and has nothing to do with actual bellydance. Although the movement vocabulary of bellydance is shared by other dances like Hula, American Jazz, and some Latin dances, real bellydance is based on the physical response of the body to the music of the Middle East
-- a concept called "tarab." Zumba is a fitness trend. Bellydance is an art form, like ballet or modern dance. Although it can certainly be used as a low-impact form of exercise, that is not our primary focus in the weekly classes.

Can my daughter/niece take class with me?
We do not currently offer children's classes for young students, but it can be a great bonding experience for the mature teen or tween to learn belly dance with Mom.

Can I bring my husband/boyfriend?
Sorry, but no. Our students have requested that we not allow this.

If you are considering signing up for classes, but would like to see what the class is like first, please email us and we can arrange for you to observe a class.
